Argentina Offshore Patrol (MAP)-ex gunboats / torpedo-Fairmile D in the Coast Guard Argentina

In 1948 start the negotiations for the acquisition from Britain of three (3) torpedo boats (MTB-Motor Torpedo Boat) type Fairmile D , to be used by the General Maritime Prefecture (PGM *) . Received between 1948 and 1950 were enrolled as Offshore Patrol receiving indicative PAM 1, PAM 2 and PAM 3 .

The first role of PAM was, however, serve as training vessels for the novice staff Prefecture School, complementing another ship that fulfilled that mission, the Notice "Petrel" .

Designed by Bill Holt for the Royal Navy the Fairmilie D torpedo boats were the last batch of a long series of British gunboats and torpedo boats, built to cope with the threatening E-Boat / Schnellboot Germans. Although they were at least 10 knots slower than their predecessors, the fire power of its powerful arms and excellent seamanship skills made up for this deficit. Their hulls were built mahogany double layer and was characteristic of these units and design sharp silhouette of the band reduced to bow to facilitate the launching of torpedoes.

Profile a Fairmile D MTB of the Royal Navy their original weapons, consisting of guns, machine guns, torpedo launchers, rockets and depth charges. Most of it was removed to reach the PGM (Source: http://www.mundohistoria.net)

nicknamed "Dog Boats" modular design (9 kits was made up) of these boats made that could be configured well as torpedo (MTB) or gunboats (MGB) , facilitators as well as its assembly held in more than 30 factories. Were built around 229 units before the end of World War 2 , missing a 30 operations. Its action effectively deployed in the North Sea the Channel and Mediterranean Sea .

In PGM (now Coast Guard Argentina) by becoming a Offshore Patrol, they are relieved of the excessive armaments, regardless of the guns 57mm, the 40mm Bofors gun, the Vickers machine guns of 12.7 and 7.7 mm, and of course the 4 torpedo tubes and depth charges which were normal manning. The configuration was reduced to only two (2) 20mm Oerlikon guns in single (one forward and one aft)

The dangerous, and high consumption, naphthenes engines (with a tendency to catch fire) that Total 5000 Hp supplied were also replaced by diesel engines more reliable.

The website of Museum is very well done, contains pictures and very interesting data, although the provision of photographed elements has changed from what is shown today.

recommend visit to the museum, you can go all the way in a calm and see everything in detail, and there are very diverse and interesting material. The day I attended I staff charge was not ideal, which corroborated with just a couple of questions asked, the only downside I found him to visit. Otherwise it is very well organized and very illustrative. I got plenty of photographic material that I will incorporate over future entries.

Dossier: Force Command Submarine (COFS)

The
Command origins of the Submarine Force (COFS) go back to September 3, 1933 , when arriving in the city of Mar del Plata , the first submersible Class Cavallini ( dubbed "Tarantino" by members of the Navy by source: Tarant o), to form the Submarine Division of the Navy . Seated

since the Mar del Plata Naval Base (BNMP) in COFS take three (3) conventional attack submarines: the ARA Salta (S-31) IKL-Class 209 -, the ARA Santa Cruz (S-41) ARA and San Juan (S-42) recent Class TR-1700 - (For details of these units see IKL Class 209 and see Class TR 1700 )

Coat of Arms Embroidery Command Submarine Force (COFS) .

The coat of arms of submarine force consists of a rectangular with rounded edges at the bottom surmounted by a central peak. Against a background with the national colors , blue and white (diagonal band), is located a profile swordfish, representative submarine weapon. The crossed anchors represent the status of Command lining the drive. At the top stands the traditional naval crown the Navy .

Trabacorbata with logo Argentine divers.

The distinctive insignia of the Argentine divers born in 1933 with the arrival of the submersible "Tarantino" , which calls for the creation of a distinctive for the new specialty of Navy Argentina (Amen to that, from 1917, several Navy officials had conducted training courses outside the specialty.) The current flagship , gold (with slight variations with respect to its predecessors), is basically a synthesis of profile of a "Tarantino" (hull, sail with two masts and bow gun) with the shield country located on the center (the old versions had in place the national emblem, an oval with the national colors, for officers, or an oval with naval anchor-NCO-)

this also depends on the Command Tactical Divers Group (ABT) , elite force of Navy created Argentina in 1952. The ABT has the skills to meet a wide range of missions such as punches and ports in coastal areas, demarcation of landing sites for the Marine Corps, beach and land recognition adjacent hydrographic surveys and geographical placement of underwater explosives in port facilities and / or vessels, among the most important. Had an outstanding performance on 1 and April 2, 1982 during "Operation Rosario" for the recovery of the Malvinas Islands deployed from the destroyer ARA Trinity and from the submarine ARA Santa Fe .

Embroidered national Tactical Divers Group (ABT) in two versions: the original color, and low visibility.

The coat of arms of the ABT consists two hippocampi seahorses or located back to back on a trident of Neptune , surmounted by a naval anchor . After the anchor also overlook some open wings, symbolizing the ability for parachuting and helicopter transport this special body. The pair of seahorses symbolizes trust, confidence and teamwork required for this activity. All this is housed in a circular shield blue field with , which refers to the deep sea , bordered by a golden aura crowned on top by a naval crown .

Logos (from left to right): low visibility Naval Diver, Diver gold and silver Tactical, Tactical Diver also .

Naval Diver's logo consists of two seahorses that converge toward the center, where there is a diving, historic symbol par excellence of divers worldwide. Note that the insignia of the Tactical Divers has slight differences from the coat of arms: the hippocampus look toward the center, where a parachute form a triad with Neptune's trident and naval anchor. Fifth generation of submarines - Class TR 1700-1984 Schweizer 300C Helicopter

The acquisition of fifth-generation submarines represented a quantum leap important for Armada Argentina and was part of a project which gave a superlative importance to the Submarine Force within the framework of naval weapon. The original plan conceived to complement the recently acquired IKL Type 209 submarines with 6 (six) modern oceanic units of the TR 1700 Nordseewerke Thyssen, whose hull design specifications were made anticipating potential future changes in their propulsion, from diesel-electric nuclear.

Photo 1. The ARA San Juan (S-42) moored at the Base Naval Mar del Plata (BNMP) in March 2007 (Author: Martin Otero / Source: www.fuerzanaval.com)

Of the six submarines original project, two would be built in Germany and the remaining four in Argentina in Astillero Domecq Garcia. Political changes, the cyclical economic crises, and the apathy and lack of strategic vision by successive governments, made the original project remain unfinished.

were built only two (2) submarine from Germany , dubbed ARA Santa Cruz (S-41) ARA and San Juan (S-42) , was left unfinished in the projected Argentine shipyards ARA Santa Fe (S-43) and ARA Santiago del Estero (S-44) that were completed in 52 and 30% respectively. Closure and sale of the shipyard in 1996 (Carlos S. Menem administration) the latter were cannibalized for spare parts serve to both TR 1700 on active duty, as well as different equipment for them come from Germany.

oceanic submarine designed as attack the TR 1700, equipped with diesel-electric propulsion and snorkel, it is especially suitable for raids against both surface ships and submarines against, and also for mining operations. His helmet, special hydrodynamic design, features a low profile and free of bumps, which allows optimal displacement under the sea surface, while it becomes quieter and less detectable by sonar.

The maximum operating depth of immersion of over 300 meters thanks the HY-80 steel that makes up his helmet , coupled with a submerged speed of 25 knots and a range of 9500 miles , turn it into a conventional attack submarine class. The armament consists of 22 torpedoes SST-4 fiber-optic guided reviewed.

addition, the flexibility of its modular design allows you to configure components and equipment from various sources, facilitating the upgrading work required ships of this type regularly. The interior space, is designed to optimize the useful areas, allowing interior comfort than their predecessors, but also limited.

While ARA Santa Cruz ( S-41) received a review and modernization of half-life between 1999 and 2001 to be held in the Naval Arsenal Rio de Janeiro (ANRJ) of Brazil , the ARA San Juan (S-42) joined in mid-2007 for a review and update similar to Almirante Storni Shipyard.

During 2010, government sources, there was the story that one of the unfinished TR 1700 could reach completion to fulfill an old dream of the Armada Argentina the have a nuclear powered submarine, meeting the other hand the original project estimate. The modular nuclear reactor CAREM (short for Modular Elements of Central Argentina), in advanced stages of development the INCAV / CNEA, would be installed in the incomplete ARA Santa Fe (S-43) , even though it is more wishful thinking which resulted from an announcement by the then defense minister, Nilda Garre, a reality that concrete.
